Alabama beaches are so lovely that we often overlook other opportunities for fun and frolic during vacations. The Orange Beach and Gulf Shores areas are bursting with activities and adventure, and I have a few favorite things to share with you that you may or may not know about Alabama’s Gulf Coast, especially in the fall.
1. Dolphin and nature cruises in the bay are amazing in the fall when temperatures are more bearable and demand is a little slower. Why the bay area for cruises? Two words: calm waters. Cetacean Cruises offers affordable water adventures with a delightful husband and wife duo at the helm of this operation . They cruise the slick waters of Wolf Bay, home to a resident dolphin pod. The dolphins have each been identified and given a special name that resonates with their unique dorsal fin. You can bring your own (small) cooler with drinks and snacks or you may purchase water, soda and snacks on board for $1 each. These excursions, available to anyone in the Orange Beach and Gulf Shores area, are family-friendly and easy on the budget.
2. Bill’s By The Beach is well-known for fantastic farm-to-table dinners featuring a daily fresh catch perfectly paired with an amazing wine, but did you know they offer a weekend brunch (9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday) that won’t break the bank? Not your ordinary breakfast foods, get ready to be awed with selections like Banana Fosters Pancake Breakfast (three griddled pancakes, bananas, Nutella, fosters sauce, cream cheese and powered sugar plus bacon or sausage) or a Breakfast Burger (1/2 lb. of proprietary beef and the fixings along with an egg and breakfast potatoes). Mimosas are only $2 and there’s a kid’s brunch menu just for the little ones! Bonus: no line no wait in the fall! This is a must for me anytime I’m in the Orange Beach and Gulf Shores area.
3. The Spa at The Beach Club by Spectrum Resorts is open to the public so you don’t have to be staying on property to utilize the full-service spa featuring pampering massages (my two favorites are the Swedish and the Hot Stone), facials (get the Island Breeze…you can thank me later), mani-pedis and more! Relax in the whirlpool of the relaxation room sipping on a mimosa and choose your own fragrance for your massage! This is such a hidden gem out in the Fort Morgan area of Gulf Shores and a delightful way to relax after a long weekend of beaching it.
The Beach Club during shoulder season is a great family-friendly place to stay aside from the awesome spa. You’ll find tennis courts, on-site dining and pretty much everything you need in one place! And, there are plenty more lodging options to perfectly suit your needs and budget.
Have you been to Gulf Shores or Orange Beach? Nostalgia takes me back to Alabama’s coast every year. I hope these are things that will add fun and value to your next stay!
