DeLand is a small town with big attitude situated between Orlando and Daytona Beach in central Florida. Founded in 1876, DeLand is home to the state’s oldest college – Stetson University known for grand architecture (think stately red-brick buildings and Greco-Roman columns) with magnificent oak trees. If you are on vacation in Daytona Beach, plan a day trip over to DeLand for some great adventure and sweet treats. Here’s my scoop on affordable things to do in DeLand, FL.
Skydive DeLand is the perfect way to start the day and get your blood pumping. Plan to eat a hearty breakfast at The Perfect Spot to fuel up for a day of skydiving at this world-class facility. In business since the early ‘80s, Skydive DeLand works with new and experienced jumpers to ensure a fabulous and safe adventure. They offer Tandem Skydiving, AFF training programs and a state-of-the-art facility for use by experienced jumpers. If you are afraid of heights, you can always watch the free fall from the scenic outdoor deck. Skydive DeLand is open daily from 8 a.m. – sunset.
Kermit’s Key West Lime Shoppe – DeLand
If you have ever visited Key West, you have no doubt fallen in love with Kermit’s Key West Lime Shoppes. Famous for all-things key lime including to-die-for pies, the two Key West locations have little room for production and shipping. Those things are handled in their DeLand facility and you can shop at their showroom while in town. Grab some key lime flavored sauces, jellies or any of their other unique and yummy sweet treats. Hours of operation are listed online. Are you curious about the name Kermit? Kermit Carpenter uses his grandmother’s recipe to create some 200 key lime pies a day! Now that’s some serious baking!
I’m a sucker for a quaint, thriving downtown area and Downtown DeLand fits that bill perfectly! An award-winning MainStreet Community, Downtown DeLand is chocked full of dedicated, mindful merchants and volunteers who continually strive for excellence in economic development. Downtown DeLand (Woodland Blvd) offers a myriad of storefronts that you can meander in and out of.
Take a leisurely stroll, do some shopping at fantastic one-of-a-kind stores, and visit great little gems like Pat and Toni’s Chocolate and Sweet Things (culinary chocolate masterpieces), as well as the Museum of Art Downtown DeLand location. Don’t miss some time at Artisan Alley where unique finds are everywhere! You’ll quickly see why DeLand has been voted Best MainStreet in Florida five times! (Note: take time to appreciate the painted murals on buildings…nice touch!)
The Reptile Discovery Center
The Reptile Discovery Center is a family-friendly discovery center where folks get a look at many kinds of reptile species. Inside the Serpentarium you’ll find dozens of the world’s most exotic and dangerous snakes. Also, the outside nature trail offers natural habitat looks at alligators, tortoises, lizards and the like. Additionally, this is home to Medtoxin Venom Laboratories, a commercial venom production facility. They collect venom and ship it around the world for the purpose of making anti-venom, pharmaceuticals and use in medical research.
If you love to wander slightly off the beaten path like I do, you and your family can enjoy a day or a weekend with lots of affordable things to do in DeLand, FL. Have you ever been to Daytona Beach? It’s so close to DeLand and offers a great day trip about 30-45 minutes away.
Some items in this post were part of a hosted trip to the area, but Discovery Center was not. Opinions and photos are my own.
