Norwegian Cruise Line’s first ship custom-made for the Chinese cruise market, Norwegian Joy, left the MEYER WERFT shipyard in Papenburg, Germany this past Sunday, March 26, 2017. Her journey along the Ems River will be complete in some 14 hours. The next step after taking on more staff and provisions will be departure for the North Sea for sea trials later this month.
Part of the mega cruiseliner’s Breakaway-Plus class, Norwegian Joy is 1,094 feet long, 136 feet wide and weighs in at 168,800 gross tons. Set to debut in China in summer of 2017, Norwegian Joy can accommodate 3,850 guests with luxury suites in this exclusive new ship-within-a-ship complex.
“We are thrilled Norwegian Joy has officially begun her journey to China,” said David Herrera, president of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings China. “As the first custom-built ship for the Chinese cruise market, she will offer a First Class at Sea experience for our guests and we cannot wait to officially welcome her to the fleet this June.”
Following an April 27th delivery, Norwegian Joy will set sail for China where she will showoff her many features at various port tours and one-day events in Qingdao, Shenzhen and Hong Kong. Additionally, Norwegian Joy will do some VIP partner cruises from homeports of Shanghai and Tianjin. This special tour will allow travel agents across the region an opportunity to experience the amenities available on Norwegian Joy ahead of official cruise itineraries. The ship’s christening ceremony on June 27 will be led by her Godfather, ‘King of Chinese Pop,’ Wang Leehom.
