In today’s cruising market, each cruise line is poised to create new and better ships for optimal sailing experiences that one-up the previous new ship. The latest on this playing field is Norwegian Breakaway, the largest ship ever constructed in Germany at 146,600 tons and the ability to house 4,000 passengers.

The Breakaway floated out of MEYER WERFT’s building dock earlier this week in Papenburg where she has been under construction since September of 2011. Breakaway’s signature artwork by Peter Max is iconic for Norwegian as passengers have come to expect the eclectic markings on Norwegian ships.

The Breakaway will homeport in New York City beginning on May 7, 2013. She is a beauty and will definitely add to the cruise options for those in the New England area and northeastern states, as well as those across the country looking to sail on the most innovative new ship sailing today.

“Norwegian Breakaway represents a significant achievement both for MEYER WERFT and Norwegian Cruise Line in terms of innovation and design,” said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line’s Chief Executive Officer. “Celebrating her float out today brings us closer to her much-anticipated delivery on April 25 when she will make her debut in Europe before arriving in her homeport of New York City on May 7. We can’t wait.”

“This new vessel is a further milestone for us. Its construction complies with the latest safety standards, and the ship meets all valid environmental regulations. Beyond that Norwegian Breakaway includes a lot of unique design elements and technical innovations,” said Bernard Meyer, Managing Partner of MEYER WERFT.

Next for the Breakaway, crew members will begin moving into their new homes onboard (staterooms) and get familiar with the ship itself. Sea testing is in a couple of weeks and from there, well it’s smooth sailing.

Features to look for on Norwegian Breakaway…
Upscale dining and entertainment opportunities
Unique, open-air boardwalk design
Broadway shows
Dazzling fireworks
Aqua Park (with five full-size water slides)
Ropes course
Nine-hole mini golf
Basketball court
Rockclimbing wall
New York City-themed cocktails
Ice sculptures of NYC icons (Brooklyn Bridge, Statue of Liberty & the Chrysler Bldg).

A variety of stateroom options offer maximum comfort for families and for those traveling solo with standard, balcony, suites, mini-suites and studios. Truly something for every traveler.
