Many of you may be following the events of this week on Carnival Liberty sailing from San Juan, Puerto Rico. It is never “convenient” for someone to have their vacation interrupted, but I am proud of Carnival for putting the best interest of the traveler first and offering solutions that not only provide for everyone’s safety, but also create options and compensation for those in this situation.
Here is the latest press release from Carnival Cruise Line:
The Carnival Liberty will be departing from St. Thomas this evening (September 10, 2015). The ship will proceed to its homeport of San Juan, Puerto Rico and is expected to arrive there tomorrow morning. The remaining guests on board will sail back to San Juan on the ship and have the option of staying on board through Sunday morning. Approximately 1,500 guests are presently still on the ship with the remainder having disembarked in St. Thomas to return home primarily via charter flights arranged by the cruise line.
All necessary authorities including the U.S. Coast Guard have provided permission for the vessel to sail. On Sunday, September 13, Carnival Liberty is scheduled to resume regular cruise service from San Juan.
On Monday, September 7, while the ship was docked in St. Thomas, an engine fire occurred. There were no injuries to guests or crew as a result of the fire which was extinguished by the ship’s automated suppression system. All hotel services including air conditioning, elevators, toilets, galleys, etc. have remained functional throughout the week and the ship’s normal array of activities, entertainment, dining options and programming have been offered. All guests have been accommodated on board and have been free to enjoy the beaches, shopping, watersports and variety of activities available in St. Thomas while authorities conducted their review. Guests are receiving a full refund of their cruise as well as a 50 percent discount on a future cruise. This is in addition to a $150 per person credit that has already been applied to guests’ shipboard accounts.
We apologize to our guests for this unexpected disruption to their vacation and the inconvenience they have experienced.
Carnival Liberty departed San Juan on Sunday, September 6, for a seven-day Caribbean cruise with 3,346 guests and 1,150 crew on board.
